Debugging Autotools

The following are general items which may be useful when debugging an Autotools Makefile.

(1)  When creating a Makefile.am file care must be taken to use a TAB instead of SPACES at the beginning of some lines. Any shell calls need to be prefaced with a tab and not spaces.

The error message from Autotools will say:   missing separator

If this error occurs while compiling, verify the Makefile.am lines which contain shell commands such as the following.

mk, mkdir, rm, cp, cd, install, rsync, sed, touch, \@echo

(2)  Line continuations are denoted with a backslash. There must not be any white space on the line after a backslash.

The error message from Autotools will say:   whitespace following trailing backslash
